Apple Releases MagSafe 3 Charging Cable Firmware Update

Monday October 5, 2026 5:59 am PDT by Joe Rossignol

For the first time since February 2023, Apple has released a firmware update for the MagSafe 3 charging cable for the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.

MagSafe 3 Cable Midnight Feature
Specifically, Apple last week released firmware version 3.2.0 for the USB-C to MagSafe 3 Cable. The previous firmware version for the cable was 3.1.12.

It is unclear what is included in the latest firmware, as Apple does not publish release notes for this. The update will be installed automatically over time when the cable is connected to a Mac and a power adapter. There is no way to manually apply it.

Apple does not expose the MagSafe cable's firmware version in macOS's System Information tool.

I would like to have an option to deactivate the permanent green light when the MacBook is on the charger. From what I've know its only possible to change this with custom tools.

Yes, like a small square of electrical tape.

Where do you even see FW version for the cable? :D

You can see it in the output of `hpmdiagnose`, something like:

hpmdiagnose | awk '/^HPM at/{h=$0} /^0x49\t/{d=$3; if (substr(d,3,2)=="00") next;
pid=substr(d,27,2) substr(d,25,2); bcd=substr(d,23,2) substr(d,21,2);
printf "%s\n cable PID %s bcdDevice %s\n", h, pid, bcd}'

gives me

HPM at RID 0x5 Route 0x0 Address 0x3a :
cable PID 7800 bcdDevice 3112

which is version 3.1.12 still.
